On Graduating High School
“Even though you may not think you have it all together, believe me you do!”
This is a quote from a high school graduation I attended last night.
It is typical of the false gospel of self-esteem preached to our young people today.
America says if high schoolers are confident about themselves they will succeed.
But God says being sure of yourself is a foolproof plan for failure.
How much better it would have been for those who now find themselves freshmen all over again to hear words of wisdom:
“Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands, take heed lest he fall.”
The crazy thing is I graduated high school the other day too. After many years in the youth ministry trenches, God is moving me on. I praise God for the opportunity he gave me to be the high school pastor at Compass Bible Church. What a blessing it has been for me to see him save so many young people like my two friends Bailey and Chelsea who graduated last night. Bailey got saved on the first night he ever came to our church. Chelsea got saved through Bailey’s evangelism on campus. Now they graduate high school ready to live the rest of their lives as Christians. This story is just one example of the glory of God I have seen. This picture just one glimpse of people I love.
As I graduate from True North, there is a temptation to think I am on top of the world. We saw students saved. We saw numbers grow. Today I got a text from a person I respect saying my ministry was a success.
I feel the temptation to think that I stand…
As I graduate high school, please pray God will keep this freshman pastor humble.
I don’t know what stage of life you are graduating to this commencement season, but I do know if you believe you have it all together you won’t stay standing there for long.
We all need to hear someone say to us: Don’t follow your heart.
There is only one right way to commence with the rest of your life: Deny yourself, take up your cross daily and follow Jesus Christ.
Congratulations to the Class of 2014!
This morning we woke up freshmen.
Amen Pastor Bobby. We are so grateful for you and your commitment to God’s truth!
Amen! People definitely need to hear about this!
